If you have researched Border Collies before, you have probably heard this a million times: “Border Collies need a job”. What some people don’t realize is that it’s true! Many Border Collies come in to rescues because they are too hyper or too high strung. Many of the owners of these dogs believe that their dogs were getting a job, but it wasn’t sufficient for that dog. For some dogs, going to an obedience class once a week, and working on the class material at home once a day is fine. For some, this is boring. Some dogs thrive on working sheep each and every day. Others don’t like herding, and would much rather be laying at their masters’ feet.
I have met BC’s who think their jobs are to keep their owners company. I have met others who bounce off the walls if they are not kept constantly busy. The greatest thing about Border Collies is that if their jobs are sufficient for them, they have off switches. They can be wonderful inside dogs, provided they have had time to do their jobs.
The thing that all Border Collie owners should know is that there are many things to keep your dog busy that are outside the normal expectations of a Border Collie. Many people have difficulty finding jobs for their border collies: “obedience is boring”, “you have to run too fast in agility” or “there are no sheep to herd around here”. These are not the only options for your Border Collie. This page is designed to show you some of the many “jobs” that we have found for our dogs. This page is being updated frequently, so keep checking back!
