“Calming Signals: On Talking Terms With Dogs by Turid Rugaas” Review

This is a good book that any dog lover should read. Turid Ruugas is a Norweigan dog trainer who has come up with a set of signals she calls “calming signals”. A knowledge and understanding of these signals can help us learn what our dogs are saying to us and each other, and could help rehabilitate some forms of dog aggression.

This set of signals present in almost all dogs has been classified by behaviorists as appeasement behaviors, so this isn’t new science.  I believe that the book illustrates the signals well, and is an easy read, which is why I recommend it.  For more indepth research on appeasement behaviors I would suggest looking for scientific literature on the subject.

There is also a video by Turid Ruugas on Calming Signals, which I haven’t seen, but is highly recommended by others. Add this one to your reading list!
